I can almost guarantee that there's one aspect of health your favorite baby care book, and even most mom-centric postpartum books, miss. I'm sharing it on Wednesday, along with what fostering that type of health looks like in our family, starting very early on.

I've been reflecting and reading lately on the importance of making hospitality or meal-giving approachable, by which I mean something that can happen in a reasonable week without great fanfare or tricky recipes or unrealistic expectations (of myself).

This has become more necessary as I currently navigate Hashimotos and operating with a lot less energy than I've historically had. I want very much to still serve others, but that service needs to look different for the time being.

To that end, I've nailed down some go-to recipes (thanks, Lazy Genius, for the concept of "brainless crowd pleasers") that can either stretch to accommodate my family and another family OR are a cinch to make such that it's no trouble to pop them in the oven/crockpot/food processor, etc.

We know that the Lord continues to call us to bring our widow's mite to the table each day, and we trust that He will multiply our efforts, lady. Cheers!

Particularly in early postpartum, warm cooked foods are easier on the digestion.

As an example, raw veggies may be harder to digest than cooked/stewed ones. So instead of raw carrots and dip, I made roasted carrots with olive oil and a smattering of 8 spices :).

And I didn't send any salad like I historically would have. (!) Is salad off limits forever during postpartum? Nope, and I pack mine with seeds and nuts and grated Parmesan and fruits and veggies. They are gooood. But in the very earliest weeks, I'm prioritizing soft and cooked.

For the main, I made skillet sausage and potatoes for easy-to-digest carbs mixed with protein and fat.

And the cookies? The cookies were for fun. :)

Meals:
Skillet sausage and potatoes
Roasted carrots
Cut peppers and homemade ranch for big kids
Apples and oranges for big kids
Chocolate chip cookies

Best of all, it all goes in leftover Aldi deli meat containers, so the moms can throw them away when they're finished.

The point is to highlight the reality that maternal mortality risk (risk of dying) is NOT highest *during pregnancy*.

It is highest *during the first 6 weeks postpartum* (and this is across all age groups).

This is why women should be seen within 3 weeks, not 6, after giving birth.
