If your insurance is through UHC and you're working with a lactation consultant, this is worth paying attention to.

And honestly? If you have insurance through anyone and you're receiving or interested in pursuing lactation care, this is worth your attention, too.

The reason: UHC is the biggest health insurer in the country. Guaranteed, other insurers will be looking to their example.

Case in point, we have coverage through BCBS of IL. Sure enough, when I googled, there was a policy reimbursement update from late July clarifying that only one session could be billed per date of service, even though lactation care includes two patients: both mom and baby. https://naturalwomanhood.org/reimbursement-for-lactation-care/

Yesterday, I spoke with Teresa Tomeo on EWTN Radio about why the Lindsey Clancy trial is resonating with so many women and mothers. And it comes down to this:

They've heard her story and they've wondered, quietly, in the private places and spaces of their hearts and minds: "Could that be me? Will that be me? Could that have been me?"

They recall the scary thoughts they had or are having now, the thoughts that come out of nowhere and have no connection to who they are, their values. But they're there.

And the very next thought after the horror of what's occurred to them is, "what does this say about me? As a person? As a mom? Am I a threat to my baby?"

These women don't have to be afraid (which is not the same thing as saying they don't need help), but they don't know that. It's time we told them.

And then it's time we cast a bigger, bolder vision for what postpartum can be. Not just avoiding postpartum depression or treating early or treating at all. But a vision to move towards: actually loving who we become during postpartum. It's not a pipe dream. It's possible.

It's GIVEAWAY time!!! I need your help to find a new home for this beautifully laid out postpartum cookbook: "Sitting the Month: Postpartum Recipes for Rest & Recovery" by Clarissa Wei.

The photography is spectacular, it's a pleasure just to look over the pages. The directions are clear, thoughtful, to the point.

Among my favorite quotes: "I'll be honest: No amount of food or rest will magically erase the exhaustion, identity shifts demands of being a new mother. But it did give me precious moments of steadiness."

Yes, that's precisely it. There's no way out but through many of the challenges of new motherhood, but there can absolutely be moments of steadiness amongst the hard.

And: "Most importantly, the initial weeks after childbirth are seen as a rare reset, when the body, left weakened but uniquely receptive to change, can be rebuilt stronger than before." (This reminds me so strongly of Ep 96, my book review of Rattled: How to Calm New Mom Anxiety with the Power of the Postpartum Brain).

WHO WILL WIN??: I'm looking for a new mom with the capacity to measure out (with a scale) traditional Asian herbs, or who has someone able to do this for her. :)

I wrote before about making meals for new moms in a way that 1) keeps in mind that postpartum digestion is not normal digestion (which is why some healthy foods might be better served later in postpartum, emphasizing warm, soft, cooked, easily digestible foods early on) and 2) respects whatever your current capacity is.

Today, I made:
+ roasted sweet potatoes (the extras will be part of my family's supper)
+steamed broccoli (ditto the sweet potatoes)
+roasted carrots (the seasonings I used are in the video)
+ baked the rest of a batch of rolls from over the weekend (unused dough is good in the fridge for up to 4 days)
+smoked pulled pork (pulled from freezer)
+the chocolate chip cookies I could make in my literal sleep
Bonus: the fanciest-smelling tea ever, purchased at--of all places--a landscaping and garden center I visited on Mothers Day

***I made the cookies before lunch. Everything else I made after an hourlong nap while my two youngest were also sleeping. :)
****Making meals for new moms is a tremendous way to tangibly show our love and support. And it can be done in ways that don't overtax our current needs/schedules/commitments.
